While OPD5 works year-round to provide reliable electric service to our customers, late summer can sometimes bring unforeseen challenges to our operations. Sudden windstorms, heavy rain, lightning, and blowing dust associated with monsoon weather often develop at this time of year. These fast-moving storms can occasionally cause power outages. But preparing ahead of time can help keep your family safe and somewhat more comfortable until we can get service restored.

Electricity makes our homes more comfortable and convenient. But it also deserves our respect; especially anywhere water is present. Whether you're using a hair dryer in the bathroom, plugging in holiday lights outdoors, or operating power tools in the garage, water and electricity can be a dangerous combination. Fortunately, one small safety device helps protect your family from electrical shock: the Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, or GFCI.

Common items that, to adults, are clearly hazardous may go completely unnoticed to the innocent and imaginative minds of children. In fact, these hazards can even appear enticing and fun to youngsters. So it is a good idea for parents to regularly point out to their children the electrical equipment and infrastructure that is all around them, explain what these items are and how it can pose a possible danger to children.

Throughout our history, OPD5 has been guided by the principle that growth must pay for growth... Now more than ever we must continue that course. Though the power needs of data centers may be at a magnitude we have never seen before, they are really no different than any other industrial load that comes to town. As it always has been, if a new facility asks to be served power, they must fully absorb the impact.
